Planning things in reverse, building up effects in layers and leaving many outcomes to calculated chance, betting on one roll of the dice- that's what monoprints are. They are, at once, incredibly complex, serendipitous and totally unpredictable. I love it.

In essence, they are paintings created on a non-porous surface- like on Plexiglas. Once the painting is finished, it is transfered to a damp piece of fine rag paper by using a press. You pull one, and only one, print. (a mirror image of the original painting) Voila! Sometimes great, sometimes "not so much". All of the time it is a unique experience, vaguely reminiscent of early finger painting or those folded paper ink blots one used to make of butterflies in first grade. Most of my inspiration comes from nature, from my beloved Yuba River environs, the mountains and textures and flow of the seasons.

I use water based inks on Arches 88 paper. Some of these images are available as giclée reproductions.
